The “Film + Kunst” show – FILMS: by artists, and from the Leiden International Short Film Experience

10Jun

Site-specific installation and video by Robbert Pauwels, Leiden.

This page has details about the films shown during the exhibition “film + kunst” in Galerie de Pieter, between 31 May and 7 July 2013 (Facebook).

The show was curated so that viewers would be aware of the way things are framed, not just in terms of the location of works, but also in the juxtapositionings between the diversity of media. The films shown were often placed into a context of dialogue with works by other artists such as in the work in the main room, Bed Peace 2013. Here the changing arrangement of the monitors as well as the scattered cabling and unmade bed, evoked a sense of process or change. review: “Framing the “film + kunst” show” >>

The LISFE (Leiden International Short Film Experience) films

Detail of “Bed Peace 2013” a performance and installation by Carmen McGlinn + Sonja van Kerkhoff, showing the films “9 Times” by Sansculotte to music by AMIT, “Stopwoord” by Coen van der Geest (inspired by the poem by Sybren Polet), “Ablutions” by Sonja van Kerkhoff, and “Ontpoppen” by Theolieke Smit.

Although 42 films were chosen not all were available and so finally only 18 ended up being shown in exhibition “film + kunst.”

The following eight films were also shown during LIS-VHS-FE a LISFE (Leiden International Short Film Experience) event which was an evening of performance, installations, and film showings, hosted in the Openmakers Aalmarkt 15B Studio (These are studio spaces in vacated shops in the centre of Leiden).

A projection of the film “Dawn of the Rainbow 1939” by Katie Godwin through the work “Inland Soul at Sea” by Sonja van Kerkhoff, 7 June 2013, in the Openmaker Studios, Leiden

About Galerie De Pieter
Galerie De Pieter is currently located in the premises of the old Breestraat Post office (Breestraat 46) and traces of this, such as a huge vault have been retained inside the gallery. The space includes numerous small rooms. For this show artists have been invited to make site specific installations in these.

“Galerie De Pieter” itself is a collective of Leiden artists who started organizing exhibitions, aimed mainly as a venue for contemporary art practice in Leiden in August 2009. In April 2010 they began curating exhibitions at Breestraat 46 when this building became empty. It is currently the largest contemporary art gallery space in the city of Leiden but the future of this is uncertain because the building has been sold by the city council to a private investor. The exhibitions vary dramatically in style and content. An overview of their exhibitions is here >> exposities.   Their homepage contains information about the current show.

Leiden based New Zealand artist, Sonja van Kerkhoff is curating the “Film and Art” for the first time for Galerie De Pieter, with one of the “de Pieter” artists, Michel Siebes.
